About Calvin Tsang

Calvin Tsang is a writer-director with over 18 years of experience in animated features and television. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Calvin’s film education began early at his family-owned video rental shop. His love of movies and comics led him to pursue animation.

In 2009, Calvin came to Los Angeles and began his career as a storyboard artist. He worked on Transformers Prime, Ben 10: Omniverse and the award winning TV series, Tron: Uprising.  His innovative action choreography soon earned him rise to the role of Supervising Story Director on Mattel’s Max Steel, where he closely collaborated with toy makers to reimagine the story for the action-figure franchise. In 2014, Calvin moved to San Francisco to work as a 3D Story Artist on Star Wars Rebels at Lucasfilm Animation. The experience at Lucasfilm gave him insight into combining advanced technology and cinematic filmmaking. He later utilized his skill set of 3D storyboarding to direct the Kung Fu Panda series at Dreamworks Animation TV.

While Calvin considers himself an action cinema enthusiast (or nerd), his passion lies in developing compelling characters. He joined Blue Sky Studios to work on the critical-acclaimed film, Nimona. Upon the studio’s closure, Calvin continued his journey in crafting stories at Illumination and worked on The Super Mario Bro. Movie.  He most recently was the Head of Story on Kung Fu Panda 4 at Dreamworks Animation, where he also wrote and directed the short titled Dueling Dumplings for the home release of the feature film.

When not at the studio, Calvin frequently guest lectures at universities and works on his first graphic novel.
